Hey there,
Walking out of the hospital with a brand-new baby and realizing you are in charge is one of the most daunting moments of early motherhood. What do we actually do now?
In today’s new episode of The Tiny Big Joys, our host Olivia sits down with NHS and private midwife and lactation consultant Miranda Sykes to break down the first few weeks at home.
This is part one of a two-part conversation focused on unlearning unnecessary pressure, and understanding real newborn biology.
4 Key Takeaways from Episode Newborn Basics Nobody Explains - Part 1:
1. Skin-to-skin isn’t just for the golden hour: It’s at the top of Miranda’s list for new parents going home. She recommends true skin-to-skin every day for the first couple of weeks, explaining that it can support your baby’s temperature, heart rate, breathing, microbiome, bonding, feeding and nervous system regulation.
2. Forget rigid feeding clocks: Miranda says you can roughly expect a newborn to feed 8–12 times in 24 hours, but those feeds won’t necessarily be evenly spaced. Breast milk is digested in around 90 minutes and newborn sleep cycles are around 40–50 minutes, helping explain why babies may feed so frequently. Responsive feeding, following your baby’s hunger and fullness cues, applies to both breast and bottle feeding.
3. You probably need far less gear than you think: Miranda’s number-one priority is a safe sleep space: firm, flat and independent. Depending on how you’ll be getting around, you may also need a car seat, pram or sling. And despite the common myth, you don’t legally need a car seat simply to leave hospital, Miranda explains that you can walk out carrying your baby if that’s how you’re going home.
4. There’s no need to rush the first bath: Miranda recommends waiting until the umbilical cord has come off by itself and the area is completely dry. Until then, simple top-and-tailing with cool boiled water is enough. And once you’re home, hats aren’t recommended indoors, babies need to be able to regulate and lose excess heat.
